Back Up Granola Meetings: The Archive Granola Doesn't Ship
Two facts should worry anyone whose team runs on Granola. First, retention timers can auto-delete transcripts on schedule, and on Enterprise plans admins can enforce org-wide deletion periods. Second, there is no native team export: "workspace admins cannot export other members' notes" is Granola's own documentation, and the built-in export is one emailed CSV of your own notes per 24 hours.
So the team's meeting record is both perishable and un-exportable by the people responsible for it - unless you build the backup yourself. TranscriptExporter for Granola plus one Public-scope API key is that backup: every shared meeting as its own file, on demand, through Granola's official API.
The team backup, in three steps
Create an API key with Public scope
On a Granola Business or Enterprise plan, generate an API key and give it Public scope - that lets it read the meetings shared into the workspace, not just one person's notes.
Connect TranscriptExporter
Install the Chrome extension, activate the $29 lifetime license, and paste the key. The docs cover key creation and scopes step by step.
Run the backup, then re-run it
Every meeting with a finished AI summary lands as its own file - txt, Markdown, JSON, or CSV, notes and transcript together. Re-run weekly or monthly; each meeting keeps its own file, so refreshes are simple.
No third party in your backup path
Files download straight from Granola to the computer running the export. Nothing passes through TranscriptExporter's servers, which keeps the backup compatible with the same privacy posture that made your team choose Granola in the first place.
Why teams do this now, not later
The retention timer does not negotiate. If your workspace has a deletion period, every transcript is on a countdown. A backup made after deletion is not a backup; nothing can re-export what Granola has removed.
Departures take the record with them. When a teammate leaves and their seat is removed, their un-shared notes go out of reach. A standing backup of shared meetings means the company keeps its institutional memory regardless of who leaves.
Compliance asks eventually. Legal holds, client audits, and due diligence all start with "show us the record." A dated folder of meeting files on company storage answers in minutes.

Can't our workspace admin just export everything?
No - Granola's own documentation says workspace admins cannot export other members' notes, and the native export is limited to your own notes, one CSV per 24 hours, via an emailed link that expires in a day. The Public-scope API key route is the practical team-wide path.
What does the backup include?
Every meeting shared into the workspace that has a finished AI summary: the AI notes and the transcript, together in one file per meeting, in plain text, Markdown, JSON, or CSV.
How often should we run it?
Often enough to beat your retention period. Teams with a 30-day deletion timer typically run it weekly; without a timer, monthly plus before any offboarding covers the real risks.
Does this bypass Granola's permissions?
No. The extension exports exactly what the API key is scoped to see, through Granola's official API. Private notes that were never shared stay private.
